Franz Brentano has introduced substantial innovations to philosophy and phsychological resarch that had a strong impact on a large number of students, many of who became important philosophers in their own right. With his descriptive approach to consciousness and his introduction of the notion of intentionality he has substantially contributed to the emergence of the phenomenological movement; while his clear and rigorous argumentation and his focus on logic have shaped the origins of the analytic tradition. My interest in Brentano and his school goes back to the times of my MA-thesis and has accompanied me since then. Next to a general presentation of his thought for the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy I have authored various contributions that focus on more specific aspects of his thought (such as his theory of time-consciousness, his view on science or aesthetics) and others that try to shed light at the dynamics of his school.
